War talk and odd notes from a bygone era

National Sunday School Union and Tract Society Anniversary

The nineteenth anniversary session commenced in Indianapolis and will continue through the week. The Tract society observed its anniversary this afternoon. The Indianapolis Benevolent Society marked its forty fifth anniversary with Charity Organization and Flower Mission events at the English Opera House. Governor presided with speeches by H. Thane Miller of Cincinnati ex Senator Hendricks and Rev Father Bessons among others.

Sermons and Lectures Highlight Sunday at Tremont Union

At Tremont temple Sunday morning and Columbus Avenue Universalist church in the afternoon a license question formed the theme. The Tremont pastor preached, and Judge Pitman spoke at Columbus Avenue. West church heard Dr. Barton discuss O F Frothingham's shift from liberalism. Clarendon Street Baptist marked its fifty fourth anniversary with a Sunday evening service as Cephas B Crane delivered the fourth Bible lecture.

Fires churn through Newton and Cambridge noting losses

An alarm from box 74 reported a blaze at Pleas ant and Beacon streets Newton Centre owned by S. Davis, used by Samuel Clifford for a boarding stable. A horse owned by A. F. Leatherbee and a carriage and harness burned, total loss about 3800. In Cambridge a box 21 fire at 5 45 on Sunday morning burned a water tank on the Grand Junction railroad. Damage 800. Other fires at Campbell's brickyard near Medway and West Medway destroyed kiln structures, house and barn saved, loss about 900 with no insurance. Standard Oil paradise works in Cleveland partly destroyed, loss 50000. James M Williams warehouse in Petersburg Va burned, loss 20000. Chas Goodwin & Son bakery New York burned, loss 35000. Ridale's cotton factory Chester Pa damaged 5000.

City considers single paid commissioners for health water police and fire

May council orders to study expediency of carrymen boards in health water police and fire lead to proposals for one paid commissioner per department. Hearings heard from ex officials and heads of departments while plan envisions six public works commissioners and a separate public safety panel. Committee favors one paid commissioner per department with mayoral appointment and council confirmation, plus two legislators to assist, promising annual salary savings of about 30000.

Young Men Catholic Literary Union to Join National Group

An adjourned meeting at Tremont and Terrace streets elected to join the National union of the United States by 51 to 14. Mevernick resigned from the auditing board, door keepers and ushers were named for the Thursday elocutionary trial, and a committee was formed to plan February anniversary celebrations.

Accidents injure three in Cambridge and city

Charles Whipple aged 28 of Pine street Cambridgeport fell on Green street while boarding a horse car and was run over by Hathorne coach causing a compound fracture of the right leg. Michael J. Sullivan 20 a brakeman on the Fitenburg railroad had his left hand badly crushed while shacking cars at the depot. An unknown woman was struck on the head by falling ice from a building at Boylston and Tremont streets sustaining a slight injury. All were taken to the Massachusetts General hospital.
