London Debates Canada US treaty backing amid fears of bias
A deputation representing fifty two chambers of commerce met Lords Derby and Carnarvon to protest Canada’s proposed reciprocity treaty with the United States. They argued England would be unfairly disadvantaged and urged protections to limit US duties. Derby and Carnarvon defended the agreement, noting no provision existed that harmed British trade and stressing careful balance of Canadian US relations. The piece also notes the Sheffield cutlers banquet and a remark by the American minister Schenck about peace with England.
