Bank of England and joint stock banks face liquidity crisis
On Wednesday and Thursday none could discount bills. Banks held £220 million in paper yet refused drafts. A £30,000 draft endorsed by Brown, Shipley & Co. failed at 25 percent. Merchants cashed paper for tens of thousands while Overend, Gurney & Co. allegedly told correspondents to remit less. Within four days confidence collapsed and many firms faced ruin.

Kansas Statehood and the Topeka Constitution Debate
The Kansas convention's action is attacked as usurpation by some Democrats while others defend popular sovereignty. The key issue is whether Kansas will enter as a free or slave state under a constitution formed by a legitimately chosen body. The schedule to the constitution is cited as evidence of the convention’s intent to let Kansas decide slavery by vote.
