The body of John Gallagher, 48, a quarryman from Providence, was found by the Diamond Hill roadside in Cumberland. Initial murder theories were dismissed as inhuman neglect. Gallagher, after Thanksgiving drinking, wandered alone and died in the rain while attempting to reach a nearby house. An inquest was ordered by the medical examiner.

A fatal blast at the Conynzham shaft of the Delaware and Hudson colliery in Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania killed and injured dozens of workers. The funeral of H M Hoxie was held in Des Moines Iowa with arrivals from Chicago on a six car Rock Island special and from St Louis on seven Pullman cars. Railway officials and leading business figures attended the services at St Pauls Episcopal Church conducted by Rev Dr Van Antwerp. Burial followed beside his child who died in 1861.
The British bark Drumadoon of 805 tons Captain Thompson bound for Liverpool caught fire in the outer roads at dawn. Flames spread from the hatch to the cotton cargo of 1700 bales. The crew barely escaped with clothing and baggage. Toys from the city helped tow the burning ship to Bolivar, now lying in fifteen feet of water. The ship is a total loss. cargo is insured and largely salvageable in damaged condition.

Dr Robert Laird Collier mourns the death of his son a young railway executive born October 12 1861 in Iowa City Iowa. The son who planned to marry Gertrude Baldwin of Wheeling West Virginia had just visited his family in Kansas City and was to wed next month. He will be buried in Davenport Iowa beside his mother.
