Handel and Sullivan Prodigal Son Opens Handel and Haydn Season
The Handel and Haydn Society opened its season in Music Hall with Dr Arthur Sullivan conducting The Prodigal Son. The audience filled the hall as the choir and sixty-piece orchestra performed Berlioz works and Sullivan tunes. Sullivan showed nervous but controlled leadership as the overture impressed with delicate strings and heavy brass. the oratorio displayed rich local color, with standout solos and a powerful final chorus, though some soloists were slightly overshadowed by the orchestra. The society plans Messiah on December 28 and Israel in Egypt on March 28, with tickets available for both at $2.50.
