Captain Samuel Whiston of the Midnight and his wife were carried down when their damaged schooner foundered near Beaver Harbor after a collision with the Lila D. Young during a heavy snow squall. Three crew members were rescued when the Lila D. Young reached Canso, N S.
Rupert Whiston along with brothers William and Harvey Power testified that around 9 p.m. in a snow squall the Midnight lookout spotted a schooner lights heading midships. The warning came too late as the Lila D. Young from Margaret's Bay for Canso struck the Midnight near the foremast with a cargo of ice.
President Taft returning from Panama and Guantanamo faced a severe northwestern gale as the cruiser Tennessee and convoy the Montana pitched in heavy seas off the northern Florida coast.
For hours the vessels bearing the Presidential party battled a 40 mile gale and were tumbled in turbulent sea. The President showed skill and enjoyed the blow as ship speed fell from 17 to 15 knots. The gale cleared, boats moved faster toward the capes, and Norfolk is the target for a Tuesday noon disembarkation.

The firm is charged with selling 40 to 50 million dollars in mining and oil stocks worth little. Authorities say the raid targets fake brokerage houses and aims to curb mail swindles.
Charles L. Vaughn a director of the Continental Wireless Telegraph and Telephone Company is held on $10000 bail after a second raid. Inspectors say the company sold stock totaling at least $1,000,000 with no investor return. Vaughn also treasurer for the Columbia Finance Company, acting as fiscal agent for Continental. Several other fraud cases are noted as part of a broader government campaign against mail fraud.
