Republican Convention Looms for City Tickets in Newton

The Republican Convention to nominate mayor aldermen school board and street commissioner will convene at Mechanics Hall this evening. Delegates favor Maj Lucius Slade but a party nomination seems likely. Various aspirants include Spaulding Sawyer Walbridge Codman Prescott O Bigelow Pierce Edward L Pierce and Bradlee. A faction opposes the New Court House report and seeks an independent mayoral ticket with Alpheus Hardy named as mayor candidate. Seventeen election supervisors have objections pending over pay, with a payroll quirk noting Republican supervisors claim ten days and Democrats seven. The Young Democrats propose Donnelly and Gomez for Common Council and Gallagher and Naphen for School Board. The Democratic State Central Committee Finance Committee met with no quorum to discuss year round headquarters. Newton.
