Testimony before the board states an inmate was left without medical care for six days in a Worcester institution. Probers report the person was found with recent bruises, triggering an inquiry into treatment and oversight.
Benjamin F. Simmons 27 attempted suicide by jumping into the water at Grover's Cliff near Winthrop yesterday afternoon. Three boys and his cork leg intervened, saving him from drowning and ending his personal crisis.
Simmons, a Boston printer, attempted suicide by immersion in the Atlantic. A note found on him cites love for a Malden girl and blames her mother. he was saved at Metcalf Hospital in Winthrop where doctors say he will recover. Two teenagers aided in pulling him from the water after hearing groans.
Postmaster Mansfield declares a full postal holiday for clerks and carriers on Thanksgiving Day. Morning mail delivery on holidays will be omitted, while special delivery letters will be delivered as usual.
Congressman James M. Curley announced he will not withdraw from the mayoralty race even if Mayor Fitzgerald seeks re election. The Roxbury figure made his stand during a Tremont Street speech to the Retz Clothing Merchants Association after a city committee dinner had been planned.

Yale college football fans readied for a big matchup as the Eli squad arrived at Auburndale with a full coaching staff and trained corps. No cripples reported, while Cornell noted minor injuries to Foggy Ainsworth but overall the Bulldogs enter in strong physical trim.
James Doherty, 26, of 68 Myrtle Street West End, was arrested by Patrolmen Andrews and Kahn after a dramatic chase through the Scollay Square to Haymarket stations. He faces a charge of attempted larceny as trains rushed past. both officers and suspect narrowly avoided injury. Doherty had been on probation after a similar offense last June in Charlestown.
Worcester State Hospital doctors testified in a cruelty investigation before the State Board for Insanity about 68 year old patient Joseph Lanz who suffered six days with five broken ribs before discovery. Doctors offered theories but could not rule out assault as cause and records lacked patient account. Lanz was found badly used up with new injuries during a prior visit.
Fire destroyed the Langdon Hotel in Intervale near North Conway at 11 tonight causing about 16000 pounds in losses. Guests escaped unharmed as neighbors and local fire crews fought the blaze. Cause is not yet known and the proprietor, William Pendextery, was away.

Frank Damon hunting near Marshfield found the body of Law T. Turner on the North River bank. Turner disappeared from Scituate on Oct. 1 and was believed to have been killed or met with foul play.
