About five hundred people gathered at Tremont Temple for a mass meeting called by the Chinese Equal Rights League to repeal the Geary exclusion act. Two hundred were Chinese. Dr. Miner, William Lloyd Garrison, Dr. Lorimer, Wong Ching Foo, and Sam Ping Lee spoke or were present. Wong Ching Foo, head of the league, described the act as a monstrous measure and urged Congress to repeal it at once.
In Springfield on November 18 special to the Post Yale and Harvard students danced nervously amid portents of the next day’s contest. The city’s most brilliant social event, an innovation welcomed by society leaders from Boston to Chicago, drew patrons from major cities and noted matrons as hostesses. Boston theatre managers face a fresh legal challenge as an agent demands no children be employed in performances. About twenty youths who appeared in Babes in the Wood's prologue at the Boston were told to stop, and other venues like Hollis Park and Columbia face similar orders. Managers say they held special permits from aldermen and vow to contest the mandate while awaiting legal counsel.
The Boston Post notes candidates for mayor include Homer Rogers and bank president Charles G. Allen, with Charlestown Alderman Michael J. Barr rising as a surprise choice. Barr's supporters met at the Quincy House vowing to back him against the Galvin camp and a weak nomination next Tuesday night. Galvin says he will abide by the convention outcome.
