Kimberley Mines Closing Near Hopetown Front

The De Beers mines in Kimberley are practically closed as Boers fortify the area. Thousands of workers have moved to the town center and receive aid from the mayoral relief fund. Big Fight at Ladysmith during Transvaal engagement

The clash near Ladysmith on November 14 involved 380 Transvaal burghers attacked by British with thirteen guns. Casualties were small for the Boers. one killed and three wounded, with thirteen horses killed and seven wounded. British losses were not disclosed.

Roxbury Assault Case Involves Two Politicians Arraignments

In Roxbury District Court Thomas J Sheehan and Thomas J Furey were arraigned for assault and battery on bartender Martin Downey who testified that after drinks in the Monor store Sheehan struck him with beer and Furey held him by the coat tails. Doyle corroborated the testimony. Furey was acquitted and Sheehan fined two dollars.

Carnegie to testify on trusts before Industrial Commission

Andrew Carnegie promised to appear before the Industrial Commission in December to testify on trusts. Samuel M. Rice of the Whiskey Trust told the commission the distilling firm controls about 90 percent of U S spirits, seeks fair profits, and plans to keep output aligned with demand while pressing for revenue law changes and lower whiskey taxes.

Navy Gun Captain Maguire Drowns Off New York

William F. Maguire gun captain of the battleship Massachusetts drowned yesterday afternoon at the foot of the Forty second Street ferry in New York. He fell from a launch while returning to shore. body not recovered. A Jamaica Plain resident, 23, former Boston College student, first Enterprise class graduate, and Navy hopeful with nautical training on the Pacific Mail line, he was highly popular in his district.

Desperado Benson Captured Near Barnstable Jail

Cape Cod’s boy desperado Marshall N. Benson, who broke jail last Sunday, was captured between 11 and 12 today at Miss Nellie F. Young’s cottage near the jail and courthouse. Warden G H Cash of Barnstable county jail seized him at gunpoint after a search with Deputy Sheriff ash and Jailer McArdie. Benson pleaded for liberty saying he would kill to gain it, and faces Monday hearing likely yielding transfer to Concord Reformatory.
