Life of Darwin Autobiography Excerpts From New Volumes
Review of Francis Darwin edits Life and Letters of Charles Darwin. Autobiography chapters cover childhood at Shrewsbury and Edinburgh, early interests in nature and science, Beagle voyage prep, and evolving views on religion. The piece notes Darwin’s self analysis, health struggles, and methodical mind shaping the Origin of Species. It contrasts his early piety with later agnosticism and discusses his search for first causes and the role of natural selection in addressing suffering.
