Ex Secretary Leslie M. Shaw charges Boston as the worst port for customs fraud, claiming undervaluation schemes have cheated the government of hundreds of millions. He cites New York and Philadelphia as involved but singles out Boston as the prime source.

A large touring car owned by William B. Hodgkins of Ballardvale crashed into an iron trolley pole near Wellington bridge at about 6 pm. The car was demolished and occupants Mrs. Helen Hodgkins, her 4 year old son, and Dr. H F Kingston were thrown to the ground with injuries. Kingston suffered a broken nose and all were treated then went home. Lights failed on the car, making the pole difficult to see in darkness.

Thousands gathered for a demonstration overflowed Tremont Temple and moved from Copley square to Tremont Temple with Park Street Church hosting the overflow. Led by Chief Marshal Albert E. Carr and the Waltham Watch Company Band the procession followed a route via Boylston Berkley Columbus Park to Tremont Temple. The Dudley Street Baptist Church Page Class led the march with about 300 men wearing crimson armbands bearing P and C in gold.
Mr and Mrs Phineas Jordan parents of Chester Jordan recently convicted of murder visited Jordan in the East Cambridge jail. They spent over an hour with him in tears and he showed no concern about the case or possible Supreme Court appeal.

After a third attempt to explore the shaft, R Y Williams of the United States Geological Survey, who supervised volunteer explorers, telegraphed for more oxygen caps and apparatus. The kit is expected early tomorrow and a score of men will accompany the experts into the air shaft, which was opened late today.
The mail steamer La Seyne of Messageries Maritimes, en route from Java to Singapore, collided early today with the British India line steamer Onda and sank within two minutes near this port. At least unknown number of passengers and crew are unaccounted for. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities investigate the incident.

In Ahmedabad British India Lord Minto viceroy and Lady Minto escaped death when two bombs were hurled at their carriage. A dragoon rode up with a sabre and deflected the first bomb. The second bomb struck a jemidar shielding Lady Minto and fell harmlessly.

Augustine Fr Costello aged 60 died last night in New York. He was one of 40 Fenians who sailed from the United States on the Erin's Hope in 1867, arrested at Sligo Bay and tried for treason in England. His US citizenship saved him. He later wrote books on Ireland and the Fenian movement.
