Thiers distracted by incessant revolutionary fears
The article portrays M. Thiers experiencing constant dread over plots and invasions including fears of the Internationale, the return of the exiled Emperor, and military conspiracies. It notes a rumored army coup aimed at arresting the President and proclaiming an Empire, while awaiting denials and possible reassurance from figures like Napoleon’s envoy.

Survivor found after wreck of American brig Shelehoff
The American brig Shelehoff 213 tons from San Francisco bound to Callao with lumber was struck by a cyclone on July 3. Only survivor Captain Luder Hopken, found emaciated, described crew death toll, scarce provisions, and a lone salvage of a nautical almanac. Six months at sea left eight or nine living before rescue.

Earl Russell on social movement and Prince Albert’s hypothetical leadership
Earl Russell correspondence details the so called social movement from origins in peer and worker union proposals. He denies political aims and urges steady progress for social reform, noting Prince Albert would have led if alive. A Chicago library drive aims to replace the destroyed library with subscriptions led by Tom Hughes. The British Government grants 300 pounds to Dr Livingstone’s children as he heads toward the coast.
