Providence cancels 4 percent beer saloon openings

Providence authorities refused to permit saloons to open for 4 per cent beer after Judge Arthur L. Brown issued an injunction against enforcing the Volstead act. Walter A. Presbrey and city solicitor gave no reasons. United States Attorney Harvey A. Baker sought a restraining order from the court but was denied. An appeal to Boston is planned with a decision expected by next Tuesday.

New York Market Rebounds as Call Money Falls to Six

New York once again saw a market rally as call money rates dropped from 16 to six per cent in the late session. Leaders of the rebound included General Motors and Mexican Petroleum, with motors, oils, steels, and equipment stocks advancing two to five points amid heavy trading around 2.2 million shares. The recovery followed an opening selloff caused by high call money and aided by broker-facilitated liquidity and Washington’s unchanged credit stance.
