A bill filed with the House clerk by Representative Torrey of Beverly imposes a 100 dollar fine on any dealer who requires customers to buy other goods to obtain sugar. The measure seeks to curb tied sales and ensure delivery without add on purchases.
The bill targets ongoing sugar shortages tied to dealers requiring a dollar’s worth of other goods for purchases. The Commission on the Necessaries of Life has urged rationing as the sole remedy, noting it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and take at least a month to implement, with expected relief possibly arriving sooner.
A proposal bars dealers from forcing customers to buy specific goods to obtain sugar. If the measure becomes law, dealers must sell sugar as long as it lasts without regard to whether the buyer is a regular customer or buying other items. The bill, led by Representative Torrey, would penalize such requirements.
