A historical column lauds Mr. Blaine as a man of deep learning and philosophy. It contrasts his defeat with Mr. Cleveland's victory, arguing Blaine would choose defeat over a narrow win and praising the era as one of wonders in 1884.
St John defeats Ben in New York by roughly five thousand votes. Grover Cleveland turns 48 on March 18 next. Franklin Pierce was a few months older at his 1855 inauguration. Ex Senator McDonald earns credit for strong Indiana results. There is no selfishness or mulishness in our admirable old saddle bags.
The London Times backs Senator Bayard for secretary of state. The Cincinnati Commercial Gazette notes he is the man for the times in the view of millions of his countrymen.
It is cause for congratulation that Gov. Cleveland's handsome gains in New York were made in the rural districts, and in those wards of Brooklyn where the reform sentiment is strongest.
The search for John A. Logan continues without success and other notable Republicans are listed as missing. Cols. Drinkwater and Plympton are among those unaccounted for, with Plympton believed blown apart when the powder boat exploded.
Democratic Raleigh observers noted a slogan about Blaine while New York editor Ottendorfer faced backlash for anti Irish remarks. In several voting districts Blaine’s name appeared scratched from the Cleveland ticket, suggesting a weak showing that could drop Cleveland’s electoral count from 219 to 218, still with a majority of 17.
At the Bangor annual meeting, officers and directors were elected for the International Railway of Maine. Directors include J. H. Pope Ottawa W. B. Ives D. B. E. McFee Sherbrooke Noah Woods E. R. Burpee Frank A. Wilson Bangor J. H. Pope vice president Noah Woods secretary J. F. Rawson. The group voted to apply to the next legislature to change the route and seek permission to build a bridge across Moosehead Lake.
Amounts paid to the state militia for special duty, spring and fall drills, and camp duty over the past year are listed by item. Special duty total 1089 with bounty 971 and transportation 118. Spring and fall drills total 12353 with bounty 10002 and transportation 2260. Camp duty total 60074 with bounty 55077 and transportation 1997. Grand total 73517.
Rufus D. Willis of Waltham, aged 70, was struck and killed by a train at Moody Street crossing at about 7 30 P M Thursday. No blame attaches to the crossing gatekeeper as the gates were down and Willis, who was slightly deaf, attempted to cross and did not realize the train’s rapid approach.
Vending the recovery of Inspector of Pawn brokers McCausland Osicar Marston of division 45 who has had experience in the work of the Dawnbroker s office has been detailed to take the inspector s place. Hon William B Shurtleff Presidential elector from Springfield who is also judge of probate and commissioner to qualify by officers has resigned the latter position under the constitution he has held but two of the offices at One Lane.
No changes of consequence reported. Blaine's managers are in debt about $130,000 and no one found to help pay the bills. Chief Justice Noah Davis, replying to a toast on Our national character, said the nation should not be judged by how passion rushed to override judgment in the recent political contest.
Special despatch reports Cleveland and Hendricks victories celebrated with torchlight processions in Washington Dover Newburyport Fitchburg Warren Westboro Biddeford Lowell and other towns. Parties illuminated streets fired cannons and fireworks as crowds cheered. A shooting incident in Washington wounded a torchbearer Sullivan as a man in a crowd was captured.
A New York report states the Tammany hall committee of seven met with the chairmen of the Democratic national and state committees to deny any deal with Republican aldermen affecting the presidential election. Ex-Senator Foster said Tam many supervisors would block any board action that could cost the democratic electoral ticket a vote and offered to work jointly with national and state representatives on beneficial instructions.

The Republican State Central Committee met on Thursday at Park Street headquarters with Henry Cabot Lodge presiding. The treasurer reported sufficient funds to cover campaign expenses and the group voted to keep the offices open year round. Lodge thanked officers, praised the party’s organization, noted personal disappointment in the sixth district result, and commended Southworth and Whipple for their campaign work while affirming acceptance of the New York count.
A special meeting of Boston aldermen dealt with declaring the latest election outcome. The recount report added nothing new. Julius J. Chappelle protested the legislature seat awarded to Charles A. Prince, claiming his own election and lack of recount notice. The city clerk explained that a notice had been issued to Mr. Chappelle.
The board set an hour for the recount and, after a letter from the corporation counsel affirmed proper procedure, adopted the report and placed it on file. No further business was conducted.
The House of Commons approved Nile expedition credits and navy Egypt funds while the Hartington led debate on Bechuana aid. In Paris the Patti divorce tribunal refused Madame Patti's petition, granting divorce to the Marquis De Caux and ordering costs. Desain notes a United Ireland warning of fiscal revolt to press Irish demands.
Rev George M Bodge was installed as pastor of the Church of Our Father East Boston succeeding Rev Cudworth who died on Thanksgiving 1883. He comes from Milton Lower Falls, Harvard Divinity School graduate, with a sermon by Rev James De Normandie on The Aristocracy of Souls and a service featuring several clergymen and a vestry collation.
In Boston and vicinity several alarms were logged on Thursday. A $50 fire struck Frank Uniack’s store room at No 59 Poplar Street. A false alarm from Hartford and Wendell Streets reflected a red hot stove but caused no fire. A blaze at John Newman & Sons Florists at No 7 Tremont Street caused $150 in losses, with minor smoke damage to John Murdough, and slight damage to the Chadwick-heirs building. Brief reports by telegraph note fires in Biddeford, Me, and New London, Mo, with approximate damages.
Allentown Pennsylvania November 13 J J Shadt of this city sent a carved horseshoe marked Luck to Gov Cleveland. The governor replied that since receiving the gift the contest has been decided for the party he represented and he will credit the horseshoe for what has occurred and preserve it in hope it brings success to give the people good government.
Secretary McCulloch works on his annual report and reportedly favors tariff revision. He asks the comptroller and treasurer to withhold their reports until after Congress convenes. In 1885, 721 national banks with over 189 million in capital expire, most likely to extend charters or reorganize. Gjert Lootz of Boston named vice consul for Denmark in Massachusetts. National City Bank of Boston charter extended to Nov 16, 1904.
In Baltimore the executive committee of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society meets. The Bulgarian mission report is read. mission expenses total 2150 dollars. Africa work lags as Miss Amanda Smith in Liberia writes that evangelization there will be done by white missionaries, and that returning African Americans risk losing religious fervor and assuming superiority over natives.
In Claremont New Hampshire the state board of agriculture met this morning to discuss stock breeding. Mayors and college professors spoke on feed and feeding ensilage and combinations of feed. Speakers included Mayor Humphrey of Concord President Gerrish of Webster G B Williams of Walpole J O Adams secretary and Prof Blanpied of the state agricultural college.
Masked robbers entered Capt. John Morrows residence in Mansfield at 10 pm and bound Mrs. Morrow and a Mrs McCoy. They ransacked the house, taking 500 dollars in cash and valuables. The women freed themselves this morning and alarmed authorities. Both were badly injured and Mrs Morrow may not recover.
A skeleton found several miles from Worcester has been identified as Bridget Fallon, 60, missing since July 17. The widow of George W. Gill has donated 6000 to the city hospital to build a male ward, to be named the Gill memorial ward.
Disturbing seismic activity was reported around 7 50 PM in Hopkinton Hillsboro Antrim Bradford and Warner with Warner experiencing the strongest shaking. Concord notes a quake last night affecting northern and western parts of the city.
Norwich reports Windham county superior court in Brooklyn indicted Andrew Squires of Ashford for murder in the first degree for killing his brother during a drunken brawl weeks earlier.
Hamburg reports the ocean steamer Wieland bound for New York grounded in the Elbe off Wittenberg after sailing from Hamburg. Help has been dispatched from this port to assist and inspect the vessel and its passengers.
