Edward W. Ray committed suicide in an uptown garage last night, dying instantly from a self inflicted gunshot on the right temple. He faced sorrow over his mother’s death in an auto accident last May and lived at 30 Mt. Pleasant Street, Winchester.
The National Woman’s Christian Temperance Union held sessions in Nashville on November 12. Carrie Nation’s request to speak was refused but she addressed a large crowd nearby. A football ban resolution was defeated after debate. Officers elected include President Mrs. Lillian M. Stevens and officers from Illinois and Maine.
Auditor records show Nathan Matthews earned 25157 in 1900 from the city and 3850 in the Park Department case. He is said to have billed 4000 for Heights of Buildings work at 666.67 per hour for about six hours. Investigations target sales of swamp land for Parental School, Bristol Street HQ site, Waldo Brothers cement and pipe payments, and related contracts under Matthews tenure.
It was just before 7 when Ray entered the garage and spoke with the manager. A pistol shot ended his life as he sat in a chair, the revolver at his feet. His death followed the recent death of his mother and estate pressures affecting his wife and grandmother. Ray, 34, was a prominent club man and nephew of E. A. Hammond of the Hammond Company, employed at 294 Devonshire Street.
Edward Payson Weston arrived in Batavia three hours behind his planned time ending a day of travel. He appeared fatigued and immediately rested after completing the first day of the second half of his journey.

At East Greenwich Academy in East Greenwich Rhode Island a boiler exploded in the new dormitory tonight causing partial wreckage. Miss Florence Bissell 16 of East Hartford Conn Miss Hesper Gould 16 of Hartford Conn and Edith Kellogg 15 of Holyoke Mass were injured while sleeping above the boiler and carried to the basement with the wreckage.
The finance board heard testimony that Atlas Construction owned by Senator Linehan and Frank Conroy kept two sets of books on Deer Island city work. One set showed proper wage schedules while the other showed employees paid less. Linehan and Conroy clashed with Counsel Sughrue and Kennedy as they refused to answer questions about the books and about large city checks drawn to Hallion and endorsed by Hallion and Linehan. Police maintained order as Conroy and Chairman Matthews exchanged sharp exchanges finalizing the incident.
Senators Linehan faces a tense public hearing with police on standby as questions over Atlas Construction Company books spark sharp exchanges. Frank Conroy deflects questioning while warning the panel about past incidents as the session grows heated and chaotic.
Miss Ada Vera Simonton of Pittsburg declares she will aid in bringing Harry Thaw to justice. She says she is not a fugitive and has never dodged justice, and she plans to surrender with the first official who reaches her in New York.
Miss Simonton pledges testimony favoring Mrs. Holman Evelyn Nesbit Thaw's mother and vows to fix Harry Thaw after she returns from South Africa where she studied monkeys. She had been sought for the first trial but was unreachable in the jungle.
Firemen rescue three injured students, Miss Gould with three fractured ribs and severe bruising, Miss Bissell and another unnamed student badly cut and bruised after a blast shattered the dormitory northeast end. The blast rattled town buildings as bricks toppled onto the main academy yard. Boiler heating system was blamed.
Mrs. Nellie Magnes of Waterbury clung to carriage shafts with her two month old son Harold as a runaway horse pulled their light carriage two miles along Middlebury road. She suffered two broken ribs and extensive bruising while shielding the child, who remained unharmed, after the auto pursuers and riders failed to stop the frightened team.
