Student Fatally Jumps From Bridge at Northampton
Sarah Brainard Farrar a 19 year old freshman at Smith College died by her own action this afternoon at 4. She walked to the middle of the Central Massachusetts railroad bridge over the Connecticut River, swung herself over the edge, shrieked for help, and hung until exhausted before falling into twenty feet of water below. Identified by a handkerchief in her cloak, her body was recovered after five hours. Motive given as melancholia tied to her brother Edward Farrar of Keene NH who died months earlier. Her sister and mother reside in Keene, with friends having watched her and planned to take her home.
