Twenty seven anarchists in Boston gathered for a memorial meeting at New Era Hall. The morning stock market was dull and weak though later closed active with Bell Telephone West End Land and Atchison as notable features.
At 11 54 a.m. August Spies Albert Parsons George Engel and Adolph Fischer were executed by hanging in Chicago's Cook County jail. The four faced death bravely refusing comfort, singing Marseillaise and bidding farewell to comrades as they were led to the gallows.
In Cxacaco on November 11 reports describe the condemned men Spies Engel Fischer Parsons facing execution at dawn. They pass the hours with composure, talk of socialism and family, and sing before the gallows as witnesses note their fortitude and calm resolve.
Fielden and Schwab to be taken to Joliet after interviews at the jail. Fielden refused to speak while Schwab claimed a conspiracy murdered five men unjustly, faulting Spies Engel Parsons Fischer Lingg as more connected to Matthias Degan’s death. He warned the innocence of the dragnet victims cannot be undone.
Norwich CT November 11 Hood’s accounts in the water office are short 613924 dollars. Harvey Chapman bondsman for Hood refuses to pay the 6000 dollar bond without a suit. City will sue to collect the bond. Hood’s whereabouts are unknown.
Arrivals include steamers State of Pennsylvania Glasgow Winthrop Portland Elsa Wilkesbarre racing and many coastal craft. Sailed ships include Caroline Victoria Professor for Callao and Eastern Star for Demerara with several others listed to sea.
Quiet city streets give way to a tense scene around the jail as Mrs. Parsons and companions attempt to visit their husband. Police deploy roped barriers and hundreds guard the area while later clashes erupt with a pistol drawn and officers seizing weapons.
Clement A. Schuetz a cabinet maker of 1156 Third Avenue denies being the Haymarket bomb thrower. He says he worked at the New York Third Avenue car shops and was in Pullman Illinois on the night of the riot. Schuetz claims he and Markoff became ac quaintances by chance and that he refused questionable schemes, incurring Markoff’s enmity.
About 4000 labor group members, many Germans, observed a holiday in New York and planned resolutions to make November 11 a permanent labor holiday. Police, including plainclothes units, monitored events as Saloon owners Schwab and Sehlag hosted gatherings and Herr Most warned against newspapers. Anarchist meetings continued with vows of opposition to tyranny and tributes with crape worn for thirty days.
Across St. Louis and other cities on November 11, numerous small fires and alarms unsettled residents. Incendiary hints and dynamite finds raise city-wide unease, while New Haven reports an effigy hangs a shoemaker who espouses anarchism and Adams sees 250 Socialists marching with red flags. Milan guards the US consulate after anarchist threats tied to Chicago verdicts.
London papers comment on Chicago executions comparing mob methods to Ireland and London efforts. Morning Post calls it a lesson for English Radicals and notes the event as guidance. Daily Chronicle voices relief that justice has been carried out. The Times notes juries judges and governors involved.
