Nine Dollar A Week Wage Proposal Draws Debate
The Minimum Wage Commission heard calls for a nine dollar weekly minimum for shopgirls. Proponents from the Retail Clerks' Protective Association argued current average wages are seven dollars for women over 18 and four for under 18. Critics warned higher wages could limit hiring and raise costs for patrons. Other witnesses discussed home work and its impact on lengthy seasons in cloak and garment industries. A follow up hearing is set for Friday November 17.
