Lawson threat stirs Back Bay property dispute

Thomas W. Lawson and owners of nearly two million dollars in real estate clash over the fate of Lawson Park at Beacon Street and Bay State Road. Abutters accuse Lawson of pressuring for an inflated price while Lawson says he may build a garage storehouse or grocery on the triangular park if a settlement is not reached. The park has a ten year tangle with $272000 claimed by Lawson as his share and $80,000 already raised toward purchase.

Lawson Park dispute stirs Back Bay real estate flare

In Boston’s Back Bay, heirs to Jennie A. Lawson seek settlement of the Lawson Park estate as plans for an apartment house loom. The family argues the land should remain a park and accuses others of blocking sale while abutters fund push for public purchase. The case centers on a 1901 purchase price of 175000 with current value cited at about 272000.
