A Nov 8 dispatch reports multiple fires causing significant damage. In Gloucester a large stable on Commercial street burned, with horses and vehicles destroyed. adjoining buildings also burned. Fire Chief Lane and the department saved nearby properties, one firefighter injured. Insured losses listed for Boynton, Davis, Swett & Co., Moore & Bro, and others. Separate blazes hit St Patrick’s Church in Utica, Bedford farm buildings, a seven story Columbus factory complex, and Hopewell Mills mule room in Taunton. Last evening at 7 20 an incendiary fire destroyed Dr. W H Bowman s barn on Nonantum Hill Brighton with hay and farming implements lost. The damage is about 7200 dollars. Alarm from Box 718.
New Haven Conn Nov 8 sessions of the convention of New England college presidents were carefully guarded with delegates pledged to secrecy. Topics included directing students in elective studies, B A and M A degrees, and condensing the curriculum from four to three years. President Eliot of Harvard advocates a three-year course. The athletics topic was not under discussion. The association will meet next year at Middletown Ohio.
Dispatches relay deep fissures in Ohio Republicans after Foraker loss. Sherman faction foes vow retaliation while Grosvenor allies face cuts. Democrats gain seats, tariff reform touted. Governor Hill notes New York victory signals strong Democratic principles and unity in 92. Campbell remarks stress home rule tariff reform and opposition to third-termism.
A coal train parted on the mountain and crashed into a gravel train at about 11 am. William Stevens of Gallitzin, flag man, was killed instantly. Fireman Harry McKelvey is probably fatally injured. Forty gravel train men were hurt or shaken. The wreck tore up track and delayed traffic as a relief train brought the injured to town. Stevens leaves a widow and child. Engine No. 1140 was nearly destroyed.
At a Journal des Debats dinner Léon Say set forth a moderate liberal policy for Republicans. He urged adherence to principles, rejecting group bargains, praised order and tolerance, and warned against Boulangist excess. He argued good finances start with sound politics and opposed new income or land taxes.
Dusveur Iowa November 8 Senator Allison reports the Legislature will be Republican on joint ballot by eight to ten with one district uncertain. The Herald Demands opposition unite to back Governor elect Boies for Senator, predicting some Republicans will back Boies rather than Allison. Full county returns show Boies ahead by 7122 votes.
The committee on sites and buildings in New York weighed using Central Park for the exposition. Flower proposed Riverside and Morning Side parks with land between One Hundred and Tenth and Thirteenth streets, excluding Central Park. Flower’s substitute passed 10 to 1, Cooper dissenting. Strauss’s measure allowing any Central Park use also passed.

Lexincton Kentucky November 8 Colonel William Cassius Goodloe collector of internal revenue seventh district and Colonel Armstead M Swope met in the post office corridor at 145 PM both drew weapons Swope fired Goodloe knocked the pistol and was wounded in the abdomen Goodloe stabbed Swope who died soon after Goodloe walked to a physician and was reported as hopeful with no arrest The cause stemmed from a May 1 1888 Republican convention remark. both men prominent in Kentucky politics and connected to national figures The tragedy stirred Washington officials with President Harrison affected and public interest intense
