New York November 8 The Herald prints an interview with President Cleveland via its Washington correspondent about the election result. Cleveland describes the loss as a contest between two great parties over clearly defined principles and says the other side had the most votes. He praises Governor Hill's honesty and notes Mrs. Cleveland bears the defeat with him. He declines to discuss future residence or movements, stating no hurry and no settled plan.
Secretary Fairchild returned to Washington and attended the Cabinet meeting. He said he was not discouraged about tariff reform and blamed Cleveland's defeat on money. He noted better reception among manufacturers and working towns, while warning that defeat could delay moderation and extend steps toward free trade beyond expectations.
