Eyewitnesses Testify in Long Island Portuguese Case
Abner D. Snow testified as the first witness in the court of inquiry regarding the evicted Long Island Portuguese. He described twenty two years on the island and lobster fishing nearby. George B. Brooks, a longtime carpenter and contractor from East Boston, also testified about his knowledge of the Portuguese settlement and Ferrarau's house valued at about 1500 dollars. Antonio Francisca, unable to speak English, indicated he understood little English when asked. After several other witnesses, the Portuguese rested their case. A discussion followed on submitting the case for argument, with counsel preferring evidence based submission. The city solicitor remained noncommittal and the court adjourned to Friday at 3 o'clock.
