Comprehensive freight rail plan to lower Atlantic port costs
A proposed universal freight railway would keep trains moving on double tracks at one to two mile intervals from Portland to Norfolk. It aims to consolidate lines under one management, use fixed rates, and force competition to slash freight prices. The idea follows earlier Massachusetts rail consolidations and the New York Central link toward a continental system.
