The Rev. Mary D. Whitney preached her first sermon as pastor of the Second Unitarian Church in West Somerville yesterday morning. The small village church looked cheerful with sunlight streaming through.
The speaker urges mutual support between pastor and congregation and aims to lift the people toward higher Christian ideals. After the sermon Mrs. Whitney gave the benediction and, after services, parishioners greeted the new minister with hearty handshakes and welcome words.
Weather indications show fair conditions today with warmer southerly winds. In New England and eastern New York the forecast calls for light showers in northern portions of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire with warmer south winds.

In Watersbury Connecticut on November 6 an early north bound freight struck and killed a man found across the rails near the Derby race track. The medical examiner cites beating prior to death, likely by assailants after a prize fight at Anson's Saturday night. Victim identified as William Brown, 50, a Naugatuck truck walker operating between High Rock Grove and Derby.
Annie Jankoikurlie a 19 year old Pole employed in Squire's Court East Cambridge is under arrest on suspicion of murdering her illegitimate babe. She is in hospital at Cambridge Almshouse and will be brought before court when her condition allows.
Governor Russell begins a unique Cape Cod tour departing Boston last evening aboard a decorated special train. He stops at Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, East Brewster, Harwich, South Dennis, Yarmouth, West Barnstable, Sandwich, Bourne, Wareham, Middleboro, Brockton, and returns to Boston. Receptions planned at each station along the route.
The Rev William R Lord, pastor at Harrison Square Church, questioned congressional candidate Mr Atwood to learn if he used influence to win liquor licenses for constituents. Atwood reportedly denied it. The pastor planned further investigation and warned outcomes could be decisive. (Continued on Second Page.)
The Helen Mac, Captain Thaxter, was crushed in ice on Oct. 6 at 71 30' N 169 30' W. Only five of her 40 crew survived after clinging to the mainmast for 48 hours until rescue by steam whaler Beluga. Two more men died afterward, including Captain Thaxter, with Wright Bowen & Co. as owners.
