Pewabic Copper Mine Outlook and Financial Tangles
October output reached 271 tons at Huron Copper mine, with a new mill due January. The Pewabic lode on level seven runs rich and 18 feet thick. Directors dispute funding via borrowing versus assessment, risking debt as a $2 per share levy yields about $80,000 before collection. The company owes $65,000 to $70,000, and a larger stake was needed to halt stoping and push development toward Quincy, where greater copper value lies. The public often blames managers, but the piece argues management acted in the company’s best interests and laments the long dead-work period crippling Pewabic.

Correction to War Eagle mine article misstated Kellogg role
A November piece misrepresented W G Kellogg as going to the War Eagle mine for specified duties. Kellogg served as clerk and assistant superintendent at 150 dollars monthly from May 1880, with appointment in August, and later moved to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company at Lake Superior. He returned to Boston in September 1882 and pursued settlement for his claim, gaining partial cash and awaiting balance. Kellogg’s integrity is affirmed and the article’s misattribution is regretted.
