In Columbus Ohio the presidential campaign closes with Republicans forecasting a 15 000 to 30 000 plurality and Democrats claiming Campbell will win. Ohio polls show divisions over tariff reform and local support for Foraker, Campbell, and the party tickets as voters weigh prohibition and statewide races. Reports from Cincinnati Cleveland and Sioux City reflect tight races with both parties claiming leads and expected majorities in state legislatures.
Richmond dispatch reports the November Virginia contest will attract the largest local vote in state history with both parties mobilizing reserve voters in southwestern and valley counties. Lieutenant Gravenreuth of Captain Wissmann's expedition defeats Chief Bushiri's Matites near Usarama. He drives them inland for four days from Bagamoyo, finds 500 Mafites dead, and reports no European casualties while friendly natives continue to harry the rebels.
The New York harbor list shows arrivals including bark Caracas and schooners M. 8. Lewis and Richard Vaux, with names such as South Shore and Jane L. Newton. Steamship Lisveneur sailed for Para and several ships cleared for London, Hong Kong, Rotterdam, and other ports.

Shortly before 6 o clock this evening a man crossing the Boston and Maine tracks at Central square was struck by an inward bound train and killed instantly. The body was taken to Darcy’s undertaking rooms and identified as William Pierce of 14 Essex Place. He was thirty years old and married.
