Monti Lectures on The Principal Men of Modern Italy

M. Luigi Monti opened a Monday noon talk at the Hawthorne rooms titled A Retrospect of the History of Italy. He traced centuries of disputes amid a rising literature current, noting Italy’s map shifted from scraps to a free nation and that secret societies formed against tyrants while upper classes lagged. He announced Foscolo and Azeglio would be discussed next Monday. The Boston Grocers' Association held its annual meeting at the Merchants' Exchange, with George Hyde chairing. Details cover year’s work, losses, and officers elected, including Silas Pierce Jr as President and Ebenezer Alexander as Treasurer, amid notes on withdrawals and other grocers forming similar associations.
