Political debate over party prospects in Pennsylvania

The Molly Maguire faction faces doubt as election misgivings rise. Grant campaign hopes hinge on New England support, with Connecticut Massachusetts and New Hampshire urged to come aboard. Republicans seize on southern strength while Sumner argues experience could lead to rule. The Daily Advertiser questions Democratic candidates and warns against Butlerism clouding truth.

New York bankers warn of ruin with Tilden win

Four years after bankers and brokers in New York warned that Greeley’s election would trigger a business panic, and panic followed, a new circular predicts business ruin if Tilden wins. The public prefers testing the prophecy backwards, hoping to avoid Hayes era ruin by backing Tilden.

Dana Cambridge speech contrasts with Cincinnati views on currency

The Cambridge address by Mr Dana endorses Warren for Congress and supports Claflin on hard money, but critiques the Republican orthodoxy. The piece notes Dana's differing stances as a delegate versus an individual, predicting voters seek a capable helm rather than a strong personal rhetoric, and questions Dana’s usefulness to his party after Cincinnati.
