Italian forces under Cadorna escape a German trap and reach the Tagliamento River ready to fight the war’s decisive battle. Germans claim 180000 prisoners captured as both sides brace for Italy’s fate.
Premier Kerensky told the Associated Press that Russia is worn out by the war and that the other allies should shoulder the burden. He questioned where the British fleet is now that the German fleet has moved into the Baltic, signaling a shift in public opinion.
Berlin claims 60 000 Italians were cut off and compelled to surrender as the Italian army retreated in good order. The report says thirty thousand German soldiers including two division generals were killed in the Bainsizza plateau battle while General Cadorna shifts reserves toward the front and consolidates a new line behind the Tagliamento River awaiting a battle with the Teutonic allies.
Sir Eric Geddes announced in Parliament that 40 to 50 percent of German submarines in the North Sea Atlantic and Arctic had been sunk. He cautioned that German submarine construction remains rapid and noted ongoing Allied patrols.

A spectacular fire at Camp Devens gutted the officers quarters of the 303d Heavy Field Artillery Regiment. Believed started by a defective oil stove left burning in a sleeping room, flames roared through the building within minutes. A score of officers, many New England graduates of Plattsburg, lost gear and personal belongings while making frantic rescues as smoke billowed from the eastern end of the camp.
Major Cecil Stewart of Boston was the sole officer to save a majority of his equipment and belongings in a blaze. He and the mess cook were the only two men left in the building.

New York on November 1 reports measures to prevent vicious short selling in the stock market. The moves are linked to German interests and described as part of an organized propaganda effort to foster pessimism.
Fire last night gutted the Melrose Theatre on Main Street Melrose causing an estimated loss of 50 000 dollars. The three story brick structure held a motion picture theatre two stores and several offices. The blaze began in a cellar and rapidly spread to upper floors. Aid came from Malden Everett and Wakefield and the departments halted the flames.

Francis T. Garland secretary of the constitutional convention committee for ratification of the anti aid amendment replied to Boston papers asserting misstatements. He said he will state facts correctly and be fair to the named individuals.
Mr. Lomasney of Boston stated on the convention floor that the position was not to prevent any private institution from receiving state funds for educational or charitable purposes. The remark framed the debate within the bill of rights committee proceedings.

At a mass meeting in Mather School Dorchester citizens of draft division 18 formed the War Service for Enlisted Men of Division 18. The object is to support men drafted or in service. Subscriptions reached $500 with officers elected President Daniel T. O Connell Secretary John W. Anderson Treasurer Peter McCarthy.

Lieutenant De Vere H Harden Signal Officers Reserve Corps became the first American wounded when Sibert’s forces entered the trenches in France. He sustained a moderate shrapnel wound in the left leg on October 28 and was treated at a base hospital. Next of kin is Mrs. Josephine Harden of Burlington Vermont.
The note recalls Washington’s farewell address to the army and marks 1889 as the year North and South Dakota were admitted to the Union. The entry lists a 5 07 P M reference and a solar note about the sun and moon, with a mention of today’s anniversaries.
