German advances push the Allies back on both flanks as German reports claim 25,000 prisoners and heavy losses. French and British forces are said to be yielding ground under intense pressure amid a momentum buildup.
American forces report a second victory in as many days after intense combat near Cantigny. The attack near Montdidier created a salient in the German line, with Hun counterattacks repulsed as U S troops push gains eastward in the Lorraine frontier Luneville sector.
German forces push French and British troops along a 30 mile front from Soissons eastward to Rheims. Soissons is partly occupied with western environs and rail lines to Paris. German communications claim 25 000 prisoners including a French and a British general.
Dam floods in Hill Town New Hampshire flood scene injure plants of two manufacturers and damage two houses a power house a railroad bridge and other facilities. Continued on page six third column shows a wartime appeal and local banking advertisement.
President Wilson appeals to Americans to buy only essentials for individual health and efficiency and to volunteer by June 28 in a nationwide effort to conserve materials and labor for war needs.
German airmen dropped bombs on hospitals holding American and French wounded behind the front. Several Americans were injured by glass and a French nurse was killed with another likely fatally hurt.
Fall River Mills workers gain a 15 percent wage rise for six months starting June 3 after an agreement between the local textile council and the manufacturers' association. The vote followed a request for 2.5 percent but the demand was denied.
In the American League Boston defeated Washington 4 to 2 in game one and 3 to 0 in game two. New York beat Philadelphia 7 to 2 in game one and 12 to 2 in game two. Cleveland won 7 to 1 over Detroit in six innings. In the National League Brooklyn edged Boston 5 to 2 in game one, while Boston won 3 to 0 in game two. Philadelphia beat New York 5 to 2. Pittsburg-St Louis and Chicago-Cincinnati games were rained out.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Thursday showers and Friday partly cloudy skies. Temperatures remain steady with moderate east to southeast winds becoming variable.
