Judgment favors James A Bryan for recovery of James City a village of 1000 negroes across the Trent River from Newberne North Carolina May 29 The enslaved residents were settled on his land by Federal authority in 1862 and have remained in possession for decades The suit has endured ten years and Bryan may offer terms to amicably settle allowing current inhabitants to stay.
Albany New York May 29 Attorney General Tabor decided to bring an action to dissolve the Celluloid Novelty Company and the Celluloid Brush Company for charter violations. The applications were filed by Thomas H Ankles of Brooklyn a stock holder in both firms The case follows the sugar trust pattern and its outcome is awaited with interest.
New York customs officers seized a trunk aboard the steamship Lahn belonging to passenger W L Smith. The trunk contained solid gold cups, saucers, spoons and similar items of unprecedented quality. Officials will determine the value of the rare jewelry and plates.
National and Canadian business failures for the past seven days total 247, with 219 in the United States and 28 in Canada. Comparisons show 254 the prior week and 237 the week before. Bradstreet's tallies 203 U.S. failures, 200 last week, 186 a year ago. Dominion failures stand at 26 this week, 45 last week, 12 a year ago. Totals since January 11 and January 1 rise year over year.
Berlin May 29 Minister Von Boetticher declined immediate suspension of corn duties despite a council deputation from the German Trading Association urging it as the only way to cheapen bread for the poor. He said consumers have a right to complain but questioned the benefit of duty suspension and promised government consideration even against strong interests.
The Vermont Centennial Committee met in Bennington with Governor Page in charge. Centennial exercises begin at 9 a.m. August 19, followed by a banquet from 2 to 5. Invitations will go to President Harrison and Cabinet, governors of states and territories, top army and navy officers, Supreme Court justices, and congressional delegations of Vermont New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Ex Presidents Cleveland and Dayton will also be invited.

Ottawa May 29 Sir John Macdonald has suffered a stroke of paralysis. He is conscious but unable to speak or move. ministers gathered at Earnscliffe as the end nears. Doctors report the hemorrhage extended to his brain and recovery is hopeless. parliament may be dissolved and Sir John Thompson likely to form a new ministry.
An Indian Matrimonial Bureau under a US Army officer aided enlistment of twenty Indian cavalry companies by allowing squaws to accompany warriors. Lieutenant Edward E. Drane reports at Rosebud Agency that six men were legally married, prompting a plan to marry or bring spouses to the post. Officials expect to accommodate wives, set tents, and complete marriages when ministers are available.
PitrspurG Penn May 29 A clash over charges against Rev J F Carson editor Rev J S Milligan and N M Johnson sparked an animated session of the Reformed Presbyterian synod. The resolution named them for letters and utterances about recent trials of suspended ministers. The motion to read a critical letter failed amid objections. Appeals from suspended ministers were sent to the Discipline Committee without reading. Board of Missions report showed poor foreign mission support. Synod adjourned to Canton Ohio after Whitsun day 1893.

Near Centralia No 4 struck misplaced rails. engineer Pat Quirk killed, fireman Todd badly burned and likely to die. mail clerk Fike shaken. Wreckers reported captured at Ohio & Mississippi station.
The Central Traffic Trunk lines New England and Southern Railroad and Steamship Committees held a joint meeting to set export and import rate policies. A key resolution favors adding full inland rates to ocean rates in either direction and proposes a central bureau to report all export and import traffic, with further consideration by the East Bound Special Committee in Chicago soon.
N J Mooney and Co shoe manufacturers on Box place assigned to George H Plummer of Littlefield and Plummer. Creditors will meet soon. At six o'clock a vote on the report and amendments was taken with Worcester's substitute defeated and Logan's amendment next. The committee resolutions presented by Dr Patton on poureday were then voted on by yeas and nays. Result: Yeas 425, nays 64, Briggs's appointment vetoed.

London May 29 Mr William Henry Smith First Lord of the Treasury introduced in the House of Commons a government bill prohibiting British subjects from sealing in the Behring Sea for a set period. The duration is not specified in the bill. Mr Bryce asked about distributing latest papers on negotiations with the United States. Smith said papers would be shared if Washington agrees and noted a cable was sent seeking US assent.
At the Templars Congress in EprnpurGu on May 29 a Canadian named Oronhyatekha was elected R. W. G. Templar. Herr Wawrinsky of the Swedish Parament was chosen R. W. G. C. Schreiner of Africa was elected W. T. Brookbank of Indiana was reelected and Mr. Parker was reelected.

Harvard varsity won by three lengths over Bowdoin in a windy choppy Charles River race at Union Boat House. Bowdoin's strong two mile stroke struggled against Harvard's smoother form as coxswain errors and rough water affected both crews. Harvard finished open lengths ahead, with time shown as ten miles in 10:36 to Bowdoin 6:44. Captain Perkins urged a final push as spectators, including Yale's Bob Cook, watched.
