Frye On The Treaty Reviews Fisheries Dispute With Canada
Washington May 29 Senator Frye attacked the fisheries treaty amid a sparse gallery audience. He denounced the modus vivendi and the treaty charging implied privileges for a dollar and a half per ton. He cited Canadian speeches to illustrate gains for Canada and losses for the United States and sparred with Senator Beck over concessions and potential war. Senator Morgan countered Frye by recalling a 1870 Republican act giving free fish to Canada without treaty obligation.
