A young colored woman armed with a foot long hat pin stabbed six men on Tremont row after leaving an amusement venue. Her companion joined the assault as a riot spread through Scollay square toward the subway entrance, with several injuries reported.
Nearly 1000 people gathered around Young's Hotel as two colored women Louise Simms and Rose Richardson were arrested for affray. Officers and a patrolman from Station 2 dragged them to the station amid a shouting mob. Injured men include Norman M. Thompson and Herbert Walsh.
Gen Stephen D Lee longtime Confederate figure and former president of the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College died in Vicksburg at age 67. He served as commander of the United Confederate Veterans and helped shape Southern industrial growth during his leadership. He later received a life appointment to the Vicksburg Military Park Commission from President McKinley. Born Charleston 1833, Lee graduated West Point in 1854 and joined Beauregard as aide-de-camp. He helped direct the opening shot of the Civil War at Fort Sumter.
