A powerful storm last night damaged Morgan shops, a concrete house roof, Barrett’s cotton gin and Waco grist mill, and a new two story school. Fruit trees suffered, water filled streets, and widespread damage totals thousands. In Waco, rain deluged the city. several deaths occurred when houses were swept away or demolished, including the Deininghoff family and a Cameron residence.

A tremendous rainfall in Annapolis county swelled brooks and streams to dangerous levels. Port Lorne saw the destruction of Johnson's mill and two bridges, with Sabean's bridge also washed away. One stream split in a pasture, diverting a channel and saving several dwellings from destruction.
In Norfolk the Democratic candidate for city treasurer won by 335 votes as Republicans carried the town in the last election. The colored vote was small but helped the Democratic ticket. In Petersburg Couch won over Hinton for city treasurer by 1392 votes.

In Montpelier Vermont the thirty fifth annual meeting of the State Homeopathic Medical Society opened with about 25 attendees today. Officers were announced as part of the proceedings with no notable actions on the first day.
Dr. O A Bemis of Craftsbury was named president with Dr W B Mayo of Northfield as vice president and Dr F E Steele of Gaysville as secretary. Dr H E Packer of Barre became treasurer, with censors H C Brigham Montpelier D A Whittlesey West Randolph H S Boardman Ludion and auditors J M Vandeusen Waitsfield W L Powers Richmond A E Horton Poultney. Henry Tucker retired as president and Dr O A Gee Swanton and EK J Foster Waterbury Centre were elected association members. Much time discussed interesting cases and the next semi annual session will be January third Thursday in town.
The steamer City of Rome reports collision in dense fog with the French bark George Jeanne off New York on May 25. Only two of the bark’s crew were saved, Herbert, Albert, and Frank Alphonse Marc. The rest, 22 men, perished as the bark sank within a minute. A harrowing rescue effort followed amid fog and confusion.
Rev M F Davis and H L Hastings faced municipal court for preaching on the common without a license on Sunday. Judge Parmenter upheld the ordinance, noted public order aims, and increased the penalty to a $30 fine plus half costs, with appeals bond set at $200 each.
About 300 clerical wheelmen in the United States, including 12 doctors of divinity and 10 theological professors, plan a three week tour of Canada. Starting Aug 5 at Niagara Falls, they will travel 621 miles through Hamilton, London, Toronto, Kingston and more, returning Aug 26. Estimated total Canadian expenses not to exceed 30 dollars. The first battalion of cavalry commanded by Maj. H. G. Kemp held a spring drill on the common Thursday. Companies A and D under Captains Andrews and Burnham paraded 65 and 45 men, respectively, with a long morning drill and an afternoon program including guard mounting and dress parade. The performance was hindered by untrained horses, though many military men attended and the American Watch company band provided music.
Mr and Mrs John L Sullivan testified in one side of a divorce case before Judge Allen on Thursday. Mrs Sullivan seeks a divorce alleging brutality and drunkenness while Mr Sullivan denies the charges in defense of his bruised affection. With witnesses on both sides the proceedings lasted several hours and the judge reserved decision.
In Reading Pa a 12 year old companion of Charles Smith dropped a knife into a 25 foot well. Smith descended to recover it and became exhausted. Aneue Doyle aged 26 then descended to help and also suffocated. Both men died before rescue.
A Boston Unitarian association festival drew about 700 Unitarians to a Music Hall banquet hosted by a prominent caterer. Henry H. Edes opened with remarks praising civil service reform and honoring a panel of notable attendees led by Leverett Saltonstall, with speeches by James Freeman Clarke and others about religious progress, Bible translation, and building plans for the denomination.
