In Worcester Mass on May 28 the Worcester Continentals hosted a reception and banquet with guests from Hartford Boston and Providence including the governor's foot guard and Colt's band. A rainstorm canceled the parade and review but indoors festivities continued at Horticultural Hall into the night before the midnight train carried the guests home.

Roman Catholic prelates of the Baltimore archdiocese gathered this morning at Archiepiscopal Residence with Archbishop Gibbons presiding. Attending were Bishops Gross of Savannah Northrop of Charleston O Hara of Scranton core of St Augustine Kean of Wheeling Becker of Wilmington Del and Kean of Richmond. The conference was held with closed doors to discuss matters for the plenary council.
Louisville report states Bailiff W K Killion was slain in Laurel county when officers raided a moonshine group. Four moonshiners fortified a house and surrendered after heavy gunfire, with Killion killed by four gunshot wounds.
In Superior Criminal Court a physician faced charges for treating Mrs Bemis with kerosene bandages after diagnosing erysipelas. Bandages were applied from head to foot and kerosene poured on them on a second visit, destroying outer skin and causing agonizing torture before the patient died. Several patients testified they had used kerosene blisters with good results. The jury deliberated briefly.
The May 28 session in Portland saw Reed renominated for a fifth term amid sharp debate. Weston Thompson led a Brunswick opposition, while Yeaton nominated Reed for congressman with a 226 to 12 vote. Reed thanked the delegates, defended his decisions, and pledges to explain them if questioned. Resolutions endorsed Blaine and state party resolutions.
Nantucket May 25 Charles O Conor formerly of New York now of Nantucket Massachusetts issues his will leaving 20000 to the New York Law Institute plus books and silver, 220000 to Mrs Constance M L Miller and 10000 to others. Rest to sister Eliza Soan two thirds and one third to Miss John Mullany with executors named. Codicil 1884 bequeaths watches jewels to Mrs Elizabeth Johnson and various Irish family legacies, with detailed box records and instructions for preservation.
In CarcaGo on May 28 a bill for a receiver was filed in U S court as an auxilliary to a St Louis suit naming Solon Humphreys and Thomas E Tutt receivers in bond of 700000. In St Louis on May 25 Humphreys and Tutt appointed receivers due to defaulted interest on general mortgage bonds and risk of foreclosure wiping out equipment terminals and property.
The headless body of a man, about 25, was recovered from Portland harbor by a driftwood gatherer. Papers include a seaman's discharge to George Parrott, a Halifax clipping about the wreck of steamer Averill near Ingonish, and a shipping master’s certificate listing Parrott as crew.
Madison May 28 The state convention met at noon and elected L K Larson of Eau Claire as chairman. The platform calls for a carefully revised tariff system, denounces current duties, and backs Democratic congressmen. Delegates at large and district delegates were chosen for the national convention.
In Bridgeport on May 28 the $500 cash prize offered by P. T. Barnum for the best poem on the white elephant has drawn more than 3800 entries. An elected committee will convene at the Fifth Avenue hotel Monday to judge and award the prize, with Judge Daly Judge Brady and Rev. Robert Collyer on the panel.
In Portland on May 28 J G McFarland jeweller was locking up when a brick shattered a window. A man outside reached through and grabbed a tin tray with about 250 dollars worth of watches and jewelry, escaping with the loot. No clue to the thief. Also promoting G O Taylor Vld Bourbon in bottles only.

Robert Bently of 54 Beach street reports a pocketbook with 34 dollars stolen Wednesday. Thomas Brennan, 6, fell from a third story window at 15 Parker street and is likely to die from a fractured skull.
George De Tonignes de Neza, a member of a noble French family, was found in a New York hotel room suffering from acute poisoning after consuming a water-soaked match head dose. He was treated with a stomach pump and is now considered out of danger. The day’s Met Opera election results named Edward Cooper and others to director posts. John Wilson was named receiver for Ferdinand Ward’s property amid Marine Bank collateral. A Decoration Day fee will honor Sheridan Grant and Hancock with a review of National Guard veterans in Brooklyn.
A telegram from San Francisco states that the Raymond and Whitcomb excursion party left Boston April 10 will depart San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon May 28 by a special train of eight elegant Pullman cars. The party spends next Sunday in Salt Lake City and will reach Boston Saturday June 7 via the Hoosac Tunnel line arriving at Fitchburg Depot about 1 30 P M.
