Former Boston mayor John F. Fitzgerald attacked aliens without citizenship in Massachusetts urging compulsory military service for 350,000 foreign-born men who benefit from the country’s protections. He spoke before the Boston Council Knights of Columbus at Cathedral Hall.
Mr. Fitzgerald condemns men who avoid allegiance to any flag while profiting from civic sacrifice. He argues their strikes disrupt commerce and burden the nation by withholding labor during military calls.
The Freight Handlers Union has served an ultimatum on the Boston and Albany railroad demanding a wage raise from 14.52 to about 16.25 per week. A special meeting was ordered for Wednesday at Wells Memorial building to decide on a strike vote if no raise is granted after pending conferences.
Due to bad weather the May procession of the children of St. Ann's Church Somerville was moved indoors. The group marched solemnly led by the cross bearer and crowned the statue of the Blessed Virgin. Solemn vespers followed with Pastor Rev. Francis J. Butler assisted by Revs. M. J. Manning and Thomas R. Reynolds.

More than 10 000 people attended the annual memorial mass for soldiers and sailors of the army and navy of the United States at Fenway Park yesterday morning. The service was under the auspices of the Boston Municipal Council United Spanish War Veterans. The Rt Rev Mer John B Peterson rector of St Johns Seminary Brighton celebrated. The sermon was delivered by Rt Rev Mgr Ambrose F Roche rector of St Patricks Watertown.
Italian forces driven on the Carso plateau and the rugged country north of Gorizia report fresh success. General Cadorna’s troops claim over 1200 prisoners and 11 guns captured. They crossed the Duino to Monfalcone railroad and seized a fortified hill near Medeazza close to the coast.
Italian forces report capturing a 10 gun field battery and 812 Austrian troops near Medeazza and advancing from Plava. Cadorna’s troops stormed heights at Palliova valley head and linked lines to Mont Cucco and Hill 363, with about 400 prisoners taken. Heavy artillery near Gorizia continues as Castagnavizza activity noted.
In Chicago on May 27 a mass meeting at the Auditorium Theatre passed two peace resolutions. One urged the US government and its European allies to issue a definite peace terms statement. The other asked Chicago to invite Russian commissioners to explain Russia's aims. Six men and three young women were arrested at overflow meetings amid criticisms of the government and police.
Meagre reports from Sayre near Birmingham say a tornado struck the town early tonight, killing several and injuring many as doctors and ambulances rushed to the scene.

Shots were fired at three members of F Company Sixth Regiment Marlboro on duty in the South End last night causing a mild panic. A man hunting them escaped as guardsmen conducted a surrounding search. The shooting came from a stone wall behind St Charles street overlooking the railroad tracks.
Patrols on the district followed a late night shooting incident near the railroad. Private Christy Spiro was fired at as a bullet hit the wall. Private Higerian, William Lawrence and George Lundberg on duty reported shots from the wall. A crowd aided the search but no suspect was found. residents were ordered to keep windows closed.

London May 27 The situation in Spain is believed to be nearing a crisis and a break with Germany may come at any moment. The day saw the sinking of two more Spanish steamers with probable loss of about 100 lives.
A Madrid dispatch notes a large demonstration in favor of the allies with a resolution urging the premier to disclose Spain's sympathy for the allied cause. Authorities prohibited a meeting planned by German sympathizers amid public display.
