In the Senate the Post's free transfers bill was received yesterday and is expected to be taken up today. Advocates feel confident it will pass, though this year’s public demand for the measure is stronger than in previous sessions.
Charlestown hosts anxiety as ward contests test the city committee presidency. Corbett favored in Ward 3, Hayes forces balk in Ward 3 and Miller forces may lose in Ward 5. Donovan’s camp predicts victory amid fierce battles in Wards 9 and 12, with Keenan backing Donovan’s leadership in Ward 9 and Donovan’s assured record cited by supporters. Regulars deny rumors about resignations and naturalization lapses while urging inspection of Mayor Quincy’s vote to justify renewed trust in the ward committee.
Captain Plumer reports his scouts encountered 2000 Matabele encamped on a kopje. After opening fire and pursuing at sunset the British suffered one killed and two wounded while the Matabele fled with heavy losses. The defeat unsettles western impis.
The Ninth Regiment met at West Newton street armory to honor John Boyle O'Reilly. Colonel Bogan was tasked to seek Adjutant General Dalton’s order for a June 20 field day and statue unveiling in Back Bay Fens. Dr Capen of Tufts College will speak at the statue ceremony.
Two fires struck Gloucester on May 27. A blaze at Hodge and Poole's wharf building was extinguished with little damage. A second fire at Bennett's coal wharf barn destroyed the structure and four horses, two carriages, and supplies. Estimated loss about 2000 dollars. Arson suspected in both incidents.
The Senate voted 18 to 11 against the subway lease bill on engrossment, surprising supporters who favored a ten year limit. Senator Maccabe will seek reconsideration to preserve a ten year lease and maintain local control, with public sentiment strongly in favor of a ten year term over fifty.
A massive cyclone and fire sweep through St Louis and East St Louis killing hundreds and destroying bridges, hotels, factories, and homes. The East St Louis bridge collapses, trains plunge into the river, and fires consume Wabash Vandalia yards, Merchants Exchange, and multiple industrial sites as death tolls rise into the hundreds with thousands left injured or homeless.
From the river battle area reports list casualties on both sides. Among the dead aboard the steamer Libbies Donger are Captain Seaman and his wife, Wallace Bradshaw aged 4, Katie Claypot aged 7, Josephine Martini aged 2, Henry Besichler aged 20, and John Nolta aged 40.
In New York May 27 a rumor claims Bernard J. Weters holder of world records in 100 220 and 300 yard dashes has been protested as not meeting residency duration rules while entered from Georgetown University for the upcoming intercollegiate championships Friday and Saturday.
Edward O Brey of Milford New Hampshire a brakeman on Train 217 was seriously injured tonight in Brattleboro Vermont while attempting to couple two cars He was struck in the stomach and partly pinned between the cars He was taken to his home in a special train Doctors think he may recover and he is now in his home under care
London Kentucky May 27 Governor Bradley faces grand jury indictment for failure to file a description of his lands in the county under the new tax law.
A reception was tendered last evening in honor of Leopold Braum of Baltimore supreme secretary of the Improved Order Bnai Brith at 18 Hayward Place. A T Silberstein acted as chairman. Speeches were made by Leopold Braum Sam Dorff Dr Raphael Lasker George Pollack Dr Wolf Herman Baum J Alteriat and id Solomons. Those present included members from Raphael Lasker Lodge Boston Lodge Querido Lodge and others.
Edward O HIl, 71, married, of Second Street near Dorchester Avenue, South Boston, died suddenly last night while unloading a wagon at the Bay State Brewing Company freight house on Foundry Street. He was taken ill and died before reaching home. Undertaker Liary took charge of the body.
