City Plans Reduction of Ferry Men’s Pay
East Boston notes a new pay policy after May 29 paying ferrymen by the day and ending yearly salaries. Workers would lose a day’s pay for each day off, with deckhands losing 119.60 dollars annually, gatemen 136.76, and engineers 185.05 under the one in seven off rule. Ferry employees’ union members resist, clerks and other city staff on salaries now enjoy seven days off with a Saturday half holiday. East Boston officials and councilmen plan talks to avert trouble as a ferry employees meeting is set for Thursday night.
