In a Lowell Street blaze three residents were saved by two unnamed heroes whose brave actions helped evacuate occupants and prevent greater tragedy. Fire crews battled flames and secured the scene, with investigations ongoing into the cause.
A Boston fireman John Hogan and Patrolman Charlie Kelly saved two women and a seven month old infant from a third story window at 12 Lowell Street as flames cut off escape. Crowds cheered as ladders reached the roof and the rescued trio were brought to safety amid cheers and praise for Hogan and Kelly. The blaze damaged the building with losses not exceeding $3000, insured.
The report notes a detachment of about 2500 personnel to depart next week. It also states the steamer Ohio has been purchased with three vessels now available and negotiations for additional ships ongoing.
Washington May 26 War Department officials report little progress in obtaining transports for the Philippine expedition.
