Two Big Schooners May Go To Pieces Near Vineyard Sound
Two premier coastwise vessels the five master Arthur Seitz of Portland and the four master Frank A. Palmer also of Portland ran aground on Wasque Shoal five miles southwest of Muskeget after mistiming Gay Head light in thick weather. Both ships are likely to founder with crews ashore or aboard and tug aid is delayed by a public towboat shortage. The Seitz carried 380 tons coal from Baltimore to Portsmouth New Hampshire and the Palmer carried a similar cargo from Newport News toward an eastern port. Captain Nickerson reported the vessels passed Chesapeake then failed to sight No Man's Land or Gay Head and ran south along Martha's Vineyard before grounding. The Palmer followed closely. three crewmen left in a boat while Nickerson aided preparations to abandon. Life-saving crews monitor. wrecking tugs expected tomorrow. Seitz built Camden Missouri, 273 by 44 by 22 feet. Palmer 274 by 45 by 21 feet. Both registered about 2000 tons and 2014 tons respectively.
