Hungarian Death Custom Inspires Wilstach Portrait

A young Hungarian artist, blinded by illness, painted a scene of a condemned man visited by townspeople the day before execution. Rejected by poverty, the work was bought by Wilstach in Germany, then sent to the Paris Salon where it gained instant fame. The artist later created Christ on Calvary and Christ Before Pilate, and the images now anchor the Wilstach collection at Memorial Hall Art Gallery, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia.
