Growth of U S Tonnage and Commerce Debate in House
The House discusses the decline of American commerce with data from 1855 showing global tonnage at 15,125,000 tons. The United States held about 5,200,000 tons, leading or equaling other nations, and projected continued growth vs Great Britain. Gen Banks traces commerce from Jackson to present issues and lists numerous international disputes affecting trade.
