Cavalry Raid Under Gen Kautz Reaches Richmond Area

General Kautz’s cavalry division advances through Chesterfield Court House Cedar Row and Coalfield toward Danville Rail Road near Richmond destroying rails depots and government property. They face entrenched Rebels at Mattaox Bridge and Good’s Bridge rebuilt forts, retreat after heavy fire then push toward Petersburg Lynchburg road before returning to City Point.

Sherman Drives Rebels to Retreat After Prolonged Fighting

May 25 report from New York notes Gen. Sherman’s forces after days of engagement found the rebels in full retreat on the 6th. Four thousand prisoners taken with hundreds more arriving. Hooker crossed the river near Resaca and Schofield near Pelton. Stoneman’s cavalry pursues Johnston, with artillery support. Resaca serves as our supply depot with railroad links to the rear.
