Harvard Observatory data place Halley's Comet 85 million miles from the sun and 17 million miles from Earth as observers seek clear skies for photographing. The western sky will show the comet tonight before it sets, while a lunar eclipse at 10:46 P.M. lasts three hours.
The eclipse, second in a four year series, will be visible in North and South America, the Atlantic and Pacific, and parts of Europe Africa and Australia. The moon enters the earth's shadow at 10 46 p m and exits at 2 22 a m with totality from 12 09 to 12 34 a m.
A four story Lincoln Block building on Moody street in Waltham suffered a basement to roof fire. District Chief George H Strauch and three firefighters were rescued after a floor collapse. No serious injuries reported. cause suspected as a defective gas meter. damages estimated at 25 000 to the structure with 10 000 in stock losses at T P Adams store.
The constitution amendment to permit a general readjustment of taxation laws is before the House of Representatives today. Approved by the 1909 Legislature, it requires two Legislatures by two thirds and then a public vote. If passed, it empowers the Legislature to impose proportional and reasonable taxes on inhabitants residents and estates and to levy duties on goods and commodities entering or produced within the Commonwealth.
Ex Governor John J. Bates declares no knowledge of undue efforts to defeat the tax amendment. He says the Chamber of Commerce favors it but the commission reported and left no further influence. The panel argues classification would raise taxes, cause revenue losses, and push investment out of state, making the amendment unsuitable.
The Boston Chamber of Commerce and the manufacturers and merchants committee on tax laws issue a joint statement. They support House Bill 1660, urging a free debate and vote in Massachusetts Legislature on permitting a constitutional amendment for tax revision. They deny any hidden schemes and call for discussion and reform to replace oppressive current laws.
Dedham May 22. Two high powered touring cars collided on Washington street at slow speed this afternoon. Four occupants were thrown from the vehicles, the dented front ends were noted. Cars owned and driven by John McIsaac of Hopedale and Henry Dresden of this town. No injuries to drivers or friends.
A vast throng in Roxbury knelt on street and sidewalk as Archbishop O Connell left Mission Church after solemn high mass marking the triduum for St Clement. He blessed the crowd while they remained on their knees, amid rain dampened streets and a sober urban scene.
In Roxbury at St. Mary Church a triduum began honoring Redemptorist priest St. Clement Mary Hofbauer. Archbishop O Connell presided alongside monsignori, local pastors, and Mission Church priests with nearly 4000 in attendance. The service reflected Hofbauer s heroism against Joseph II interference and his missionary work across Switzerland Germany Austria Poland creating schools and charitable institutions.
The Children’s Mission marked its 61st anniversary at Arlington Street Church as delegates from Boston Sunday schools gathered. President Henry W. Williams presided over the gathering, seen as a prelude to Unitarian Week activities.
Reports from committees show the mission thriving yet needing a second male assistant. Treasurer records receipts 30805.82 expenditures 30625.76 balance 180.06 and income on invested funds 20147.03. Rev George Hale Reed offered opening prayer and President Henry M Williams welcomed attendees to the 61st anniversary noting 26000 dollars of work by the community and the need for more support.
May 22 Lakeville. Adam Bopp, a Middleboro shoemaker, died attempting to rescue Boston telegrapher John J. Gallagher who was holding him in a fatal grip beneath the surface off Staple's shore on Lake Assawampsett. Dynamite recovery was used to retrieve one body.
Gallagher an employee of the Postal Telegraph Company from Dorchester went to Lakeville for a day trip. He rowed out with Norman Swain Ralph Gray and P Watson aiming to meet a sailboat. He stood up in the boat about 200 yards from shore, cried for help, jumped and fell short into the water.
Washington on May 22 reports that the gunboat Venus may return to bombard Bluefields endangering American lives and property. Rear Admiral Bob Evans warned that if Venus dares such an action the vessel would be sunk in the harbor.
The Paducah and Venus operate near Bluefields as tensions rise between US Navy officers and the rebel-held port. Captain Gilmer considers firing if the Venus resists, while Admiral Evans stresses protecting American life and property. The Venus, once a merchantman, is viewed as a menace and could be sunk if necessary.
Reported details from Isaac C. Wyma Salem’s will reveal a 10 million dollar endowment to Princeton University’s Graduate School. The tale centers on William C. Proctor of Cine and a withdrawn offer, with alumni reactions and Dean Andrew S. West’s bid for a segregated site facing President Woodrow Wilson’s influence.
