Stock Market Ends Quietly Amid Apathy For May Day

Wall Street showed profound apathy with limited gains and a dampened mood. Copper steadied after a prior drop while coal stocks rose, including Lackawanna to 50, hinting at asset distributions to shareholders amid potential coal property divestitures. Closing prices softened as demand remained torpid.

Quiet Opening on Wall Street Weakened by Pennsylvania News

New York stocks opened without major change as coal stocks led with gains in Lackawanna and Delaware & Hudson while Amalgamated and Union Pacific dragged on liquidation. Pennsylvania Railroad’s $25 million Paris loan and possible fare pressure on Brooklyn Rapid Transit weighed, leaving closing prices near day’s lows. Boston market remained listless with mixed moves in Massachusetts Electric, American Telephone, Allouez, Mohawk, North Butte and Massachusetts Gas amid a dull finish.
