Charlestown Transfer Plan for Company D Faces Hearing

A City Hall hearing by the Board of Aldermen committee on public improvements reviewed the proposed transfer of Company D, Ninth Regiment from Charlestown armory at Bunker Hill to the regimental armory on East Newton Street. Residents and leaders opposed the move, arguing loss of historic character. Major Joseph J. Kelley urged transfer to avoid disbandment, while others warned against sentiment in politics. The committee will again report favoring the transfer as Aldermen largely back the project.
