A Novel Plan for Celebrating Columbus's Discovery
Edward E Hale suggests a celebratory plan in a May 20 Columbus dispatch. Colonel Thomas M Bayne, a Western Pennsylvania Republican leader, opposes free coinage and predicts Harrison will be the next nominee with Cleveland as Democratic opponent. He argues neither candidate would permit free coinage if in power, and that free coinage advocates are debtors or demagogues without broad support among business and responsible press.
