Newport, May 19 Jananschek the actress suffered a wrist fracture at her hotel Tuesday night. She is doing well and expects to resume engagements in a couple of weeks. Some engagements are cancelled but the company remains intact amid sympathy from society and theatre circles.
At Lawrence Driving Park on May 19 the 2:35 class and a special race produced the meeting’s best crowds and closest finishes. Sadie S. and Harry J. lowered records in the lower class. J B Woodbury was fined for yelling. Rex won the early heats in the special but withdrew after injuring himself. Gilbreth Maid and Arthur fought tight in another heat. Woodbury was arrested for selling mortgaged property as the event closed.
Washington May 19 Major Ben Perley Poore remains in a critically ill state with doctors saying his condition is grave due to incipient Brights disease. Age and poor health hinder recovery, and the prospect of his return is doubtful as physicians monitor him in intensive care.
General passenger agents of trunk lines approve sharing emigrant traffic at Castle Garden with the Baltimore & Ohio and the Ontario & Western railroads as part of the pool. Both roads vow not to reduce Western passenger rates. The New England road’s plans with Grand Trunk Canada were not discussed as it declines pool participation.
A reader corrects a previous article on Tremont street mall describing the tree rows and suggests widening Tremont street about twenty five feet. The notice also reports Professor S. A. Whitcomb resigning as pastor of the First Unitarian parish Whitman effective July 1.
Editor O'Brien and Tenant Kilbride drew about 5000 at the Royal Roller Rink Toronto as cheers and groans met his remarks. In Ottawa a large procession welcomed them. Kilbride described evictions on Lansdowne estates and called for support from Irish and Canadian allies.

Portsmountu New Hampshire May 19. The wife and mother of Melvin Huntress of this city were killed this afternoon at Young's crossing near Greenland Depot. The mother about 60 and the wife about 30, both deaf, rode a buggy to cross the grade crossing and were struck by an express train engine and killed instantly. The horse was uninjured.
Denver May 19. The sleeper on the Denver and Rio Grande Salt Lake express derailed near Salida at 5 am. Grace Leslie leading lady of the Kate Castleton troupe was instantly killed. Dr. George Cox suffered a severe scalp wound and Pullman conductor Aubrey was injured about the head and hip.
Henry S. Ives says a new company will consolidate the Postal and independent lines with the Baltimore & Ohio Telegraph taking half the stock to gain control. He claims the Western Union cannot acquire the B and O system at any price.
Hanlan departed this afternoon for Pullman to race Gandaur. He travels with Bubear the English champion and carries two boats, one by Davis of Portland and the other by Blaikie of Boston, arriving just before the train left.
London May 19 In the House of Commons Colonel King-Harman answered William A MacDonald on Ireland emigration. He cited unemployment crime fears and reluctance to join secret societies as causes. Speaker Peel called for order. Labouchere failed to adjourn. closure by Smith passed 278 to 156.
At Novo Tcherkask the Czarewitch was installed as hetman of the Cossacks in a ceremony read decree publicly and reward for faithful service. The Czar presented the baton with imperial regalia amid pomp and a grand fireworks jubilation.
Paris reports President Grévy asked M. de Freycinet to form a cabinet and to announce the chosen colleagues by Saturday. Freycinet plans to complete the task by Monday, with General Boulanger likely retained as minister of war. Briain notes confidence that Boulanger stays in the war portfolio, urging that any Freycinet or Clemenceau pairing yields the same outcome. Continuous preparations for war are said to foreshadow conflict.

Brussels notes Belgium metal workers join the miners strike. 18,000 workers in the center district, troops deployed to curb violence. Rome reports talks between a Salisbury confidant and the Vatican to resume diplomatic relations.
Lawrence stockholders in the Lawrence Gas Company have purchased a controlling stake in the Lawrence Electric Light Company and elected officers. James R. Simpson is president, C. J. R. Humphreys serves as treasurer and secretary as the gas company expands its local lighting monopoly amid growing use of electric lights. Further developments are anticipated.
A Lynn gathering at Odd Fellows Hall drew about 100 workers and supporters in a fund drive for Worcester county shoe operatives on strike. Mayor George D. Hart urged Lynn to contribute while plans for a subscription paper circulate. Participants included Edward L. Daly John Howard George E. McNeill Charles H. Leach and John Hagan.
The North Sydney steamer Castledale bound for Montreal struck heavy pack ice just outside the harbor in fog and sustained all forward plates stove in. The steamer Hungarian, also bound for Montreal, returned with both bows stove in from ice. A Norwegian bark from Africa was wrecked in dense fog and heavy seas with the crew narrowly escaping.
